A man was found dead after a car caught fire in South Philadelphia early Sunday morning, prompting an investigation.

Police said the fire broke out just after 2 a.m. on Sunday, October 18, 2026 in the parking lot of Pendergast Safety Company on Enterprise Avenue, across the street from Philadelphia International Airport.

According to police, one man was found dead, but it remains unclear how he died. Investigators have not been able to verify his identity because of the intensity of the fire.

An employee working nearby told NBC10 he heard what sounded like an explosion in the area.

Philadelphia police and investigators with the Fire Marshal’s Office spent hours examining the burned vehicle and the surrounding area.

Detectives were seen using flashlights to inspect the scene, while the Fire Marshal’s Office brought in a dog to assist with the investigation. The Philadelphia Police Department’s Crime Scene Unit also responded to the parking lot.

The area typically sees little traffic, particularly during the early morning hours on Sundays.

NBC10 has reached out to the Philadelphia Police Department for additional information about the investigation.
